FIDE World Championship 2004 : Results
Tripoli 2004 : Results from five FIDE knockout tournaments for the 2004 participants.

(June 2004) As we write this second article on the FIDE World Championship 2004, three rounds of the knockout competition in Tripoli, Libya, have finished. Of the initial 128 participants, 16 have survived into the fourth round. [For background on the event, see the linkbox at the bottom of this article.]

In fact, the 128 were reduced to 124 before the first Pawn was pushed. Four players -- A.Morozevich (no.2 seed), V.Milov (13), J.Hjartarson (35), and Y.Shulman (90) -- failed to appear for the first round. Their first round opponents received automatic qualification into the second round.

The following table lists the 124 players who participated in the event. Along with starting position (Seed), it shows title, country, and current FIDE rating (ELO as of April 2004) for each player. The rating was used to determine the seed.

The four columns headed 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2001 show each player's result in previous knockout competitions. The column headed 2004 shows the players' results for the Tripoli 2004 event. See the end of the table for an explanation of the contents of the 5 result columns.

The last five columns show the best result (round and number of games played) of the player in FIDE knockout events. For example, Zvjaginsev's 3.2 in 2004 in means that he was knocked out in round 3 game 2 of the Tripoli 2004 event. A blank entry means that a player did not participate in the event.

An asterisk in the last column means that the player survived all previous rounds. There are no asterisks against the first four events because all previous champions -- Anand (1997 & 2000), Khalifman (1999), and Ponomariov (2001) -- declined to play in the 2004 event.

UPDATE (July 2004) The table was updated after each round to reflect the current standings. Congratulations to Rustam Kasimdzhanov for winning the 2004 FIDE World Championship!
