EK: Playoff was inconclusive. How did Tan edge out Kan and Fuller? I suspect Fuller was eliminated because of inferior SB in the main tournament, but Tan and Kan had the same SB. But I can't find any secondary criterion that would put Tan over Kan (number of wins, Koya, number of wins with black) How did Tan edge out Kan? Did they flip a coin or something? Or play rapid/blitz, which would be very odd for those times? [Ref. BI072028]

IZ Qualifiers

EK: I know that FIDE committee (Botvinnik, Najdorf, Kashdan, Trifunovic) nominated players for the Interzonal. How many did they chose and in what order? Commentary to the Zone 8 mentions that 14 GM are already seeded into the Interzonal and that Panno is the first reserve (and thus probably won't need to play a playoff match in Zone 8). Given that six players from the previous Candidates were automatically seeded for Interzonal, this means that eight players had to be nominated by above mentioned committee. However I am missing one player. I have Polugaevsky, Smyslov, Keres, Stein, Gligoric, Hort, Portisch and ???. That missing player was then in late-1972/early-1973 replaced by Panno. After Stein passed away in July 1973, he was replaced by second reserve Bronstein. Who was that missing player that was nominated by committee but declined to participate? [Ref. BI072028] • [For more about the text that has been STRUCK, see Qualifiers for the 1973 Interzonals (October 2023)].
