MO: I recently stumbled upon the extremely good digital archive of the Catalan daily El Mundo Deportivo and I was able to examine day-by-day reports to compile a crosstable and a Swiss-like table from the event. Unfortunately, no game seems available yet (at least not from the three Italian players, which is my field). The publisher was also involved in the organization and the tournament was named as "Trofeo El Mundo Deportivo".Venue: Hotel Playafels in Casteldefells, near Barcelona (Spain)
Start date: 1985, March 3rd; End date: 1985, March 13thI think that at least one adjourned game (Garcia Paolicchi - Fernandez Garcia) ended on March 14th, but it was irrelevant for the qualification spots. The play-off between Martin Gonzalez and Fernandes was presumably played with a "classic" time-limit and didn't apparently start until March 16th to end on March 18th. - Massimiliano Orsi (via email, see also Castelldefels 1985 | SoloScacchi)

EK: BCM is wrong! In Zone 2A Shvidler and Lau played off for 2nd place. When it was tied at 2-2 Shvidler "won" because of a superior SB score in the main tournament. So Shvidler qualified for a further playoff match against 2nd placed from zone 2B which was Petursson, not Agdestein. Namely in zone 2B Petursson and Agdestein tied for 1st place and played off. Agdestein won and thus qualified for Interzonal, while Petursson qualified for playoff between 2nd placed from zone 2A. The clipping from Skakbladet is right when it says that Shvidler qualified for playoff against Petursson, while the BCM report is wrong when it says that he will play against Agdestein. About the playoff itself: Did it even happen? I couldn't find any records of it. Maybe Shvidler forfeited, because after all it was Petursson who played in Interzonal. [Ref. BI072028]ES: I saw your comment wondering what happened to a play off for the Interzonal between Shvidler and Petursson in 1985. We played it in Beer-Sheva and one day before games have started, I have been informed by Campomanes, that I have to win it out of four games. The reason : I shared 2nd-3rd places in my group, Petursson 1st-2nd in his. I won the first game, lost the second one and made draws in the two remaining, after putting a heavy pressure on the opponent. Petursson went through. - Eliahu Shvidler (via email)

EK: Graeme Cree says that there are no record of a playoff. He is wrong. The thing is that Seirawan was already qualified by rating and Tarjan retired from chess. So this only left Dlugy and Fedorowicz. And they did play off in New York 1984. Dlugy won with 3.5-2.5. Walter Browne came into the Interzonal as a last minute replacement from the rating list for Mikhail Gurevich. [Ref. BI072028]

EK: There were two Tunisians: Bouaziz and Hmadi. One of them qualified from zone 12 and the other one was host nominee (by Tunis). Which was which? [Ref. BI072028]
