- 2021-12-28: Candidates Tournament to take place in Madrid sponsored by Chess.com • 'The 2022 Candidates Tournament, which will produce the challenger for the next world chess championship match, will take place in June-July 2022 in Madrid, Spain. As the organising sponsor of this prestigious tournament, Chess.com signed an agreement on Monday with governing body FIDE and the Scheinberg family, patrons of the event.'
- 2021-12-29: Candidates play-off introduced • 'As per the decision made at the FIDE Council meeting on December 27, a playoff has been introduced for the Candidates Tournament and the Women's Candidates Tournament, to be played in the case of a tie for first place.'
- 2022-03-21: FIDE Ethics imposes a six-month ban on Karjakin • 'Sergey Karjakin is found guilty of breach of article 2.2.10 of the FIDE Code of Ethics, and is sanctioned to a worldwide ban of six months from participating as a player in any FIDE rated chess competition, taking effect from the date of this decision, 21 March 2022.'
- 2022-03-21: FIDE Candidates 2022 venue and schedule announced • 'We’re pleased to announce the schedule and venue of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2022. The magnificent Palacio de Santoña, a centrally located historic building in Madrid, will become the venue of the most anticipated chess tournament of 2022. [...] Eight prominent grandmasters will compete for a top spot in a double round-robin (all play all) tournament from 16 June to 6 July.'
- 2022-04-28: FIDE Candidates Tournament: Drawings of lots and pairings • 'The drawing of lots for the FIDE Candidates Tournament was carried out today during the FIDE Council in Abu Dhabi, in a ceremony organized by the Chief Arbiter for the event, Anastasia Sorokina. The seven players who have already qualified for the Candidates have signed the contracts and are getting ready for the tournament. The [eighth] place is still subject to the final decisions regarding Sergey Karjakin's appeal to the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission. '

- 2022-07-05: Ian Nepomniachtchi wins the Candidates without a single loss • 'With a draw in the final game, Nepomniachtchi finished the tournament on 9.5/14. In a dramatic duel which lasted five hours, Ding Liren defeated Hikaru Nakamura to clinch second place.'
- 2022-07-06: 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament came to a close in Madrid • 'Chess legends, players and Spanish dignitaries got together at the Four Seasons Hotel in Madrid to celebrate the end of the most important chess tournament of the year. During the past two weeks, eight players played 56 games altogether to determine who would be the challenger for the title of world champion in chess.'
