1. Scope
1.1. Governing Body of the FIDE Grand Prix Series 2021 (hereinafter referred to as GP Series) is the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
1.2. FIDE Global Strategy Commission (hereinafter referred to as GSC) is in charge for preparing regulations, communicating with the World Chess Events Limited (hereinafter referred to as Organiser) and the participants, conducting inspections.
1.3. The body responsible for adopting and changing these Regulations is the FIDE Council, upon recommendation by GSC.
1.4. At any time, any circumstance or unforeseen situation not covered in these Regulations shall be referred to the FIDE President for final decision.
The top level rules of the competition were based on the event from the previous cycle, the 2019 Grand Prix.
2. GP Series Format
2.1. GP Series shall consist of three Grand Prix tournaments (hereinafter referred to as GP tournaments) held between 1 February and 5 April 2022.
2.2. Twenty-four participants shall compete in three GP tournaments.
2.3. Each player shall participate in two out of three GP tournaments. Each GP tournament is sixteen (16) players event.

2.4. In each GP tournament every player scores GP points according to his/her position in the final standings.
2.5. The winner of GP Series is a player who scores the highest number of cumulative points earned in two GP tournaments he/she played.

The first round of each tournament was comprised of four double round robins ('pools') with four players each. These were followed by knockout matches among the four winners of the pools.

- 2021-05-24: FIDE announces qualification paths for Candidates Tournament 2022 'E) Two spots -- FIDE Grand Prix Series 2022; Two spots will be granted to the two top-finishers at the FIDE Grand Prix Series 2022, which will take place between February and April 2022. The Regulations for the Series will be published in June. We must note that the winner of the FIDE World Championship Match 2021 is not allowed to participate in Grand Prix Series. Likewise, none of the players already qualified via events A, B, C or D [see link for details], is expected to take part in the Grand Prix. If any of them decides to participate, they should give up their qualification spot previously earned.'
- 2021-06-17: 2022 FIDE Grand Prix Series Announced 'FIDE and World Chess are pleased to announce the 2022 Grand Prix Series that will take place in February - April of 2022 and will consist of three tournaments. Two tickets to the FIDE Candidates Tournament will be decided in a tightly-packed series organized by World Chess. The events will take place in one city -- a deviation from the typical system where Grand Prix events are hosted in different cities around the world.'
- 2021-08-12: Berlin wins popular vote; will host the Grand Prix Series and other events in 2022 'Berlin, the capital of Germany, will be the main host of the 2022 Grand Prix Series. The Series, a part of the World Chess Championship circuit, will run from February to April in a bespoke-designed chess arena.'
- 2021-12-20: Hikaru Nakamura is granted wild card to FIDE Grand Prix 'Hikaru Nakamura has been selected as the Presidential nominee to be one of the 24 participants in the FIDE Grand Prix, organized by World Chess.'
- 2022-01-21: Groups for First Leg of FIDE Grand Prix 2022 announced 'The drawing of lots ceremony determined the pools for the first leg of the Series. The ceremony, held over Zoom, was chaired by the Chief Arbiter Ivan Syrovy and CEO of World Chess Ilya Merenzon, and attended by the Grand Prix participants.'
- 2022-01-31: FIDE Grand Prix Series 2022 starts in Berlin on February 3 'The much-anticipated FIDE Grand Prix Series, the final qualifier for the 2022 Candidates Tournament, begins on February 3. The competition, organized by World Chess, consists of three legs that span over three months and two cities [Berlin and Belgrade].'
- 2022-02-01: FIDE Grand Prix 2022: Ding and Andreikin replaced by Esipenko and Wojtaszek 'FIDE has named two replacements for the first leg of the Grand Prix after receiving last-minute information that two players will not be able to compete in the tournament that starts in Berlin on February 3 due to visa and health issues.'
