Robert Fischer, seeded from his 1975 match with Karpov, declined to play in the candidates matches. FIDE rules required the reserve to be drawn from the previous candidates matches, so Boris Spassky took his place. If Spassky had declined the invitation, Robert Byrne would have played.

In July 1976, after the IBM tournament in Amsterdam, Korchnoi defected from the Soviet Union and sought political asylum in the Netherlands. The USSR Chess Federation put pressure on FIDE to exclude Korchnoi from the matches. FIDE did not buckle and, as fate would have it, Korchnoi defeated three Soviet players on his way to a title match with the reigning World Champion, also a Soviet.
Shortly before the final candidates match, Korchnoi was injured in a serious car accident.
